ENVIRONMENT, DEMOCRACY & JUSTICE

Securing the natural assets of local and vulnerable communities by supporting and promoting due process rights.

ILEG strives to irregardless of social status, gender, culture, religion, race, age or national origin ensure the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people in the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.

Overview

The increasing discoveries of minerals, oil and gas portend great challenges for human rights, social justice, and sustainable development in Kenya.

Violations of fundamental human rights, denial of access to environmental investments, failure to ensure equitable benefit sharing, denial of access to information, denial of opportunities for participation in decision making, and denial of justice in environment related matters become commonplace are some of the challenges that local communities, particularly the poor and marginalized, such as women, children, youth, the elderly, and minority ethnic groups, endure at the local, county and national levels.

Our Motivation

The increasing discoveries of minerals, oil and gas portend great challenges for human rights, social justice, and sustainable development in Kenya. We are dedicated to amplifying the voices of communities and upholding their right to a healthy environment. We believe that environmental well-being and social justice are inextricably linked, and that empowering individuals and communities is key to achieving both.

Our Approach

ILEG will strive to ensure the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of social status, gender, culture, religion, race, age or national origin in the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.

This is through initiaves such as:

  1. Community based initiatives
    • We partner with local communities to identify their environmental concerns, develop strategies, and advocate for solutions
  2. Policy advocacy
    • We work at local, regional, and national levels to influence policies and regulations that promote environmental protection, transparency, and community rights.
  3. Public awareness and education
    • We raise public awareness about environmental issues and empower individuals to act.
  4. Capacity Building
    • We offer training, workshops, and resources to equip communities with the tools and knowledge to advocate for themselves and hold polluters accountable.

Our IMPACT

  1. Securing environmental rights
    • We help communities secure access to clean water, protect their traditional lands from unsustainable development, and hold polluters accountable.
  2. Influencing policy
    • We have successfully advocated for stronger environmental regulations and improved access to information for communities.
  3. Capacity building
    • Empowering and building the capacity of the community members, we have trained and empowered hundreds of community leaders and activists, creating a network of environmental advocates.

Our OBJECTIVES

  • Protecting the environment by advocating for and developing policies and laws and practices that safeguard ecosystems, natural resources, and biodiversity for generations to come.
  • Promote environmental justice.
  • Empowering communities by working with local communities, amplifying their voices, building their capacity, and ensuring their rightful participation in environmental decision-making.
